WILLIAMS

Williams FW14

There is little doubt that when Nigel Mansell bagged the 1992 drivers' title it was a victory he deserved. What perhaps is forgotten by those who prefer their heroes in the bulldog mode is that Nigel's record breaking season owed a lot to this little beast from the pen of Patrick Head. The car served the Williams team for over two years but it was in 1992 that it proved to be in a class of its own. Power came from the potent Renault V10, while the active suspension system was without doubt state of the art. Add to that a bulletproof semi-automatic gearbox and a highly intelligent traction control system and it soon becomes obvious just how far in front of the competition the machine actually was.

Williams FW11B

Helped by the powerful V6 Honda turbo engine, the FW-11 was an advanced piece of machinery that drew heavily on space technology, especially in the area of ceramic coating of components subject to intense heat. The 1987 'B' variant included uprated cooling system to combat the heat problems. Seven FW-11Bs were built and all carried the revised Honda V6 that soon proved to be even more powerful and much more fuel-efficient. Another major step forward came in the re-active suspension system that was introduced at Monza. At the end of the season not only had Williams secured another constructors title, their drivers were also first and second in the championship with Piquet edging Mansell out after Nigel crashed heavily during practise for the Japanese Grand Prix.
