Dubbed 'the blue Ferrari' the ARC1 looked an awful lot like the Ferrari F187 - which Brunner had been involved with. He insisted that the two cars were not alike and went to great lengths to point out how much roomier the Rial was. It was roomier, and slower, and less reliable. Andrea de Cesaris tried his best with the machine and ran as high as sixth in the debut race. He finished a total of four races and scored a fourth place in the US Grand Prix.
