Minardi M195

For a car that served two years to only secure one point - especially from a team with Minardi's experience - is little short of appalling. Most of the blame belongs with Mauro Gennari - the designer - who failed to grasp the concept of what a modern F1 car should be capable of.

Gearbox related problems were the main cause for retirement, closely followed by driver error, as the team continued to play musical chairs with anyone that could afford a go in their car.

Minardi M198

Following a reorganisation of the team by Fondmetal chairman Gabriele Rumi, employing highly rated Gustav Brunner as designer and allowing Giancarlo Minardi to concentrate on the racing side of the team, plus Cosworth engines with only a slightly older spec than the Stewart's, hopes were high at the start of the season. But as is the case with Minardi, although the car was turned out beautifully, money is everything and the lack of budget generally kept them 2 seconds off the pace. They finished the season without a single point with a best finish of 7th by Shinji Nakano.
