Lancia D50

The Lancia D50 was the brainchild of the former Alfa designer Vittorio Jano (responsible for those pre-war favourites - the P2 and P3). The engine was mounted diagonally with the drive-shaft passing alongside the driver. This allowed for a lower seating position and gave the car excellent handling. Fuel tanks were suspended from the side on pontoons which gave the car a unique squat appearance. This arrangement guaranteed excellent weight distribution and also improved air flow. Perhaps more significantly the D50 weighed in at just 600kg giving it an excellent power to weight ratio. When Lancia withdrew from the sport at the end of 1955 they bequeathed their entire stock of D50s to Scuderia Ferrari who, having had a rather poor season in 1955, were more than happy to accept the gift. The D50 ran throughout 1956 and scored several wins for the team and giving Fangio yet another championship title. Minor changes were made for 1957 but by then the rest of the field especially Vanwall and Maserati had caught up once more and the 801, as it was now named, began to suffer in comparison.
